Pregnant in the Summer: How to Stay Hydrated

No, that is NOT me..Kudos to whoever that beautiful belly belongs to!

Having been rather pregnant through 3 of the past five summers, I’m definitely empathizing with all of you mamas who feel ready to pop and more than ready to pop the next person who tells you that, right in the mouth. You’re sweating in places you didn’t know had pores, clothes are not only impossible to fit into but annoying to even wear, and no A/C has enough power for what you need. So, how do you make it through a pregnancy in the summer? Over the upcoming days and weeks, I’m gonna share the things I’ve learned.

To start us off, you can’t underestimate the importance of hydration. Ignore what you are “supposed” to drink- that is a minimum. I had many days where a gallon just wasn’t enough, and my pounding head would let me know right away if I was slipping. Ditch the juices and sugary drinks that will just sap more out of you. Find a way to drink water. Drink until you aren’t thirsty anymore, and then drink some more.

Check out this article I wrote on how to stay hydrated in pregnancy. I wrote it last year, edging up on my third summer pregnant. If there was one thing my midwives can tell you about my pregnancies, it’s that my pee is clear…Erm, I mean, it’s that I stay hydrated. Without that, I’m pretty sure that a smouldering summer while 60 lbs up and one squirmy child in would take “awful” to “miserable” fast.

So go check that out, then come back here and tell me how do you plan to stay hydrated this week, pregnant or not (oh, and breastfeeding mamas- you need fluids, too!). Then, keep an eye out as we talk about easy, cooling foods for the summer pregnancy, how to keep moving and more!
